Nanofibers are fibers with diameters in the nanometre range and represent the result that Invenio obtains by processing raw materials by the Electrospinning method.
Here they are compared with some traditional fibers:
The essential ingredient for the production of fine and ultrafine fibers are polymers.
There are several processes to produce nanofibers starting either from polymer melts (i.e., heat-sensitive polymers that melt at high temperatures) or from polymer solutions. As a rule, nanofibres are produced (and used) not as a single filament but rather as a disordered weave with a nonwoven structure.
Geometrically, nanofibers show a high surface area-to-volume ratio and high specific surface area (lateral area-to-weight) compared to normal fibers or microfibers. In addition, a nanofiber membrane is characterized by marked porosity and small pore size.
In recent years, interest in nanofibers has increased precisely because of their special characteristics, the uniqueness of their structures, and their high potential for application in a wide variety of fields.
By virtue of their defining characteristic of having a high surface area-to-volume ratio, nanofibers allow the manufacturing of lighter materials and thus meet the demands of multiple manufacturing sectors. Some nanofibers can be highly hydrophobic and breathable, making them suitable for the production of protective clothing. In addition, the high porosity of membranous nanofiber structures makes them ideal candidates for various applications in the energy production and environmental protection sectors, while the realization of hollow nanofibers and controlled nanofiber structures developed from biocompatible and biodegradable sources such as polysaccharides and proteins represents added value for biomedical and tissue engineering.
To the benefits mentioned above, first and foremost the great versatility, must finally be added the many possibilities to customize individual nanofibers , as well as of the resulting membrane structures, which makes these solutions perfect for meeting the specific requirements of different industries and application fields.
