Air filter material

Air filtration technology is crucial in safeguarding ecosystems and public health due to its strengths: low energy consumption, which translates into cost-effectiveness; high efficiency; numerous areas of application.

By virtue of their porous structure and tortuous channels, which can simultaneously capture PM and allow air to pass through, fiber-based filter materials such as melt-blown, spun-bonded and glass fiber have long been used in various filtration fields. However, their efficiency in the filtration of fine particles is still low and this limitation is due to structural disadvantages such as fiber diameters in the micron range, pore size and low porosity.

As the thickness and weight of these filters must be increased to reduce the pore size and thus increase the filtration efficiency, their applications are still limited due to their high energy consumption and significant pressure drop.

Since reducing the diameter of the fibers significantly increases filter performance, nanofibersprove to bea very promising filter material due to their small diameter, open pore structure and high porosity. Unlike other techniques to produce nanofibers, Electrospinning allows the diameter of the nanofibers (50-2,000nm) to be modified by adjusting the solution properties and process parameters.

Electrospun membranes possess many outstanding features: minimal fiber diameter, large specific surface area, interconnected porous structures and ‘controllable’ morphology.

These peculiarities distinguish them from conventional fiber-based filter materials.

The application of Neatess^® as an air filter material is currently under study. What differentiates Neatess^® from other filter materials used for these applications is its environmental, economic and social sustainability.
