Filtering with nanofibers in personal protective equipment

In terms of air filtration, a separate area is personal protective equipment which has the function of blocking air pollutants and pathogens.

The development of highly efficient filter materials for respiratory tract protection is necessary because air pollution in metropolitan areas has been progressively increasing and, at the same time, current events have been showing the need for protection against viruses and bacteria.

The most common personal protective equipment, the classic face masks, are characterized by a layered structure at the center of which are one or more layers of filtering material. The latter is between two layers of TNT (generally polypropylene), one on the outer side and one on the face side, while the filtering membrane is usually composed of microfibers of plastic materials (melt-blown TNT).

Polymeric nanofibers can give rise to new-generation filters, as they can increase both filtration efficiency and service life compared to conventional materials.

Neatess® can already be successfully used as a filtering material for PPE, i.e., personal respiratory protective equipment, also called APVR: disposable masks, masks with interchangeable filters, dust filtering masks, reusable half-masks and full masks for protection against hazardous substances in their aeriform state (particles) through the filtering mechanism. What differentiates Neatess® from other filter materials for these applications is its environmental, economic and social sustainability.
